Participation (160 points):

Students will receive credit based on their daily attendance and participation in classroom activities and discussions.  Students will need to be familiar with the readings for each class period in order to fully participate.  All students are expected to engage in class discussion.  Because all students' ideas are important, respect for others and their perspectives is expected during class discussion.  Therefore, disrespectful language and humor are inappropriate in this classroom.  Students who dominate the discussion at the expense of interaction opportunities for their classmates risk losing participation points as well.  Please set your cell phones to off or vibrate.  Students not engaged in class will not receive points for participation.  Simply showing up is not sufficient effort to earn participation points.

Grade Level     Grading Criteria
D: You are present; but you do not get involved in the discussion.  Your comments in class show some thought about the material, without establishing how much you paid attention to it. You bring the text with you to class, and might have the assignment read.
C:
You get involved in the discussion occasionally.  You actively think about the text, as evidenced by comments and questions about material in the reading.  It is clear to an observer that you have read the assignment—you have a clear sense of the major ideas and themes, and refer to specific pages during discussions.
B: You are actively involved in the discussion.  You respond to what other people say (without interrupting them), and you try to follow up on what they say with comments and questions of your own.  You demonstrate that you are thinking critically about the reading and about the comments that others are making in class.  You make comparisons to other things that have been read or discussed in the class.  You indicate in some way that is clear to an observer that you have not only read, but are interacting in someway with the book—underlining, making notes, and preparing comments and questions to discuss.
A: You are actively involved in the discussion and the quality of your contributions show real thought and creativity.  You also take a leadership role in helping others to express and develop their ideas.  You not only think critically about the reading, and compare materials; but you also integrate ideas, tie the reading to the general theme, and show an ability to make the material applicable to current issues.  You have done all that is indicated above ,and in addition you have prepared some material that links the reading to other aspects of the class or to your specific discipline.
